The RTG „Standards of Governance“ welcomes guest researcher Ömer Demirtaşoğlu

The Research Training Group (RTG) Standards of Governance at Technische Universität Darmstadt is pleased to welcome Ömer Demirtaşoğlu for a one-month research stay in July 2025.

Demirtaşoğlu is a PhD candidate in Public Law and a Teaching and Research Assistant in the Department of Administrative Law at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey. After completing his undergraduate degree at Bilkent University Faculty of Law, he continued his studies at Bilkent University, completing a Master’s in Public Law with a thesis focusing on the role of the United Kingdom’s Parliament in protecting human rights within the New Commonwealth Model of Constitutionalism. He was employed as a Teaching and Research Assistant at the Department of Constitutional Law at Bilkent University Faculty of Law during his Master’s degree education.

His academic visit in July forms part of the RTG’s aim to promote international exchange and early-stage research collaboration in the field of law and governance. During his stay, Demirtaşoğlu will participate in the RTG’s internal research seminars and present his ongoing doctoral work.

Demirtaşoğlu’s research is situated in administrative law theory, with a particular interest in the normative structures governing the relationship between administrative power and individual rights. He focuses on how standards of good governance – such as transparency, participation, and accountability – are codified and implemented, particularly within European and comparative legal frameworks. This aligns closely with the interdisciplinary focus of the RTG.

He has been affiliated with Hacettepe University’s Department of Administrative Law since 2024, contributing to teaching and academic research. His PhD is supervised by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Didem Sevgili Gençay.

The visit also offers an opportunity to connect his work with comparative research being conducted at the RTG. Discussions with doctoral researchers in Darmstadt will focus on overlaps between national legal systems and transnational governance standards.

Prof. Jens Steffek, spokesperson of the RTG, comments: „We are pleased to host Ömer Demirtaşoğlu in Darmstadt. His perspective from Turkey enriches our interdisciplinary discussions on governance standards and his focus on administrative law theory brings a valuable comparative dimension to the RTG.“

Further collaborations are being explored, including potential workshop formats and exchange opportunities between the two institutions.
