We cordially invite you to the lecture ‘The new political economy of education and its discontents: marketisation, standardisation and digitalisation’ by Dr Michael Schedelik and Dr Marc Schelhase on January 20 at 18:00 s.t.. The lecture will take place at the Goethe University in the building PEG (1.G 165).

In this lecture we propose to move the education debate back into the mainstream of political economy by focusing on a critical analysis of – and the links between – marketisation, standardisation and digitalisation in schools and universities. We do this by, firstly, critically reflecting and expanding on relevant insights from Comparative Political Economy and International Political Economy. And secondly, by combining these with both key findings and emerging debates in the education literature. By demonstrating that marketisation, standardisation and digitalisation have not resulted in raising educational attainment, the lecture advances the theoretical and empirical debate in political economy at a time where the accelerating workplace transformation caused by artificial intelligence poses new and constantly evolving challenges for the political economy of future societies.
