The upcoming lecture by Prof. Dr. Amy Quark is about “Northern Firms, Standard-Setting Bodies, and Rising Powers: Influencing Regulatory Decision-Making in India and China”. The lecture will take place on 11th June at 6 pm in the castle of the TU Darmstadt (S 312), room 13.
The harmonization of domestic regulatory standards for food safety is a site of contentious politics. Historically, standard-setting bodies and scientific communities in Northern countries have been the main producers of scientific knowledge to inform regulatory standards, often through public-private partnerships. However, firms, states, and civil society in rising powers like China and India increasingly challenge this geographic power imbalance in the production of science and standards. This talk presents a comparative analysis of efforts by transnational firms and scientific standard-setting bodies based in Northern countries to shape domestic regulations for food safety in China and India. It considers variation in the success of these efforts and the implications for the geographies of institutional power over standard-setting.
